La palabra láser proviene del acrónimo light amplification by stimulated emision of radiation proveniente del inglés, en otras palabras, el láser es una amplificación de la luz por emisión estimulada de radiación.

El dispositivo láser es la fuente de luz más brillante creada por el hombre hasta el momento. Esto se debe a que posee las siguientes características:
La luz láser es monocromática, esto es, tiene una sola longitud de onda, es por esta razón que solo se puede ver un solo color, por mencionar algunos estos
son el rojo (620 nm a 700 nm) o el verde (500nm a 570nm). En contraste la luz ordinaria tiene muchas y diferentes longitudes de onda, esto es, hay muchos colores y estos se encuentran en lo que es llamado el espectro visible el cual ronda de los 400 nm a los 700 nm. Un ejemplo de esto es la luz del Sol o la luz de una bombilla las cuales emiten una mezcla de diferentes longitudes de onda, y solamente se puede apreciar aquellas que nuestros ojos son capaces de ver como la luz blanca la cual es una mezcla de diferentes longitudes de onda.
El láser produce un haz estrecho de luz en el que todas las ondas de luz viajan en fase en el espacio y tiempo, esto es, la luz láser es coherente, esta es la razón por la cual los haces de láseres son muy estrechos y muy brillantes y pueden ser enfocados en un punto muy pequeño. Debido a que la luz láser permanece enfocada y no se extiende mucho (como lo haría una linterna) estos pueden recorrer distancias muy largas y también pueden concentrar mucha energía en área muy pequeña.
Mencionadas las cualidades anteriores el láser tiene diferentes aplicaciones en la vida humana se utilizan como herramientas de precisión y pueden cortar a través de diamantes o de un metal grueso.
También pueden ser diseñados para ayudar a cirugías delicadas en el campo de la medicina; Así mismo se utilizan para la grabación y recuperación de información; se utilizan en las comunicaciones y en las transmisión de señales de televisión e Internet; por otra parte también los encontramos en las impresoras, escáneres de códigos de barras y reproductores de DVD; conjuntamente se utilizan para fabricar piezas para ordenadores y en otros aparatos electrónicos.
